Kapewa Hopfe
B.S. in Environmental Science and a B.A. in Geography, School of the Environment, SFSU (expected graduation May 2024) Undergraduate Independent Research Project: Aloha kākou! My research is focused on coastal grasslands, investigating how coastal fog and wildfire events shape the vegetation characteristics of these ecosystems. I achieved this by measuring changes in active green canopy coverage over time to assess the productivity of the vegetation at two sites, one having higher fog activity and recent low burn severity and the other with less fog and no recent burn severity. I found that coastal grasslands with higher fog and recent burn activity tend to have more active green canopy cover and that vegetation communities are different compared to grasslands that have little fog activity and no recent burn events. Kapewa has also been a field research assistant in several other projects ranging from montane meadow plant surveys to performing helping install an eddy covariance tower in a strawberry field. In my free time I enjoy trying out new hiking trails with friends and experiencing new landscapes which are abundant in California. I also love trying new foods and enjoy cooking, I found it brings the scientist out of me because I am always experimenting with recipes and trying new variables to get the results I want. |
