Teaching experience & approach. My teaching experience spans the disciplines of physical geography, environmental studies, and ecology. I integrate experiential learning and field-based activities into the classes that I teach because I believe this approach is one of the most effective ways to engage students with course material. I also strive to integrate research experiences into course work because, in my experience, students are most excited about learning new material when class projects and assignments have real-world applications. Overall, whether teaching upper division college students or middle school science classes, I thoroughly enjoy the challenges and experiences associated with being an educator.
In addition to teaching, I also engage in education outreach programs. For example, while a postdoc at UCSC, I attended a Women In Science Summit at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, which was an event to connect early-career and senior woman scientists to discuss issues and challenges facing women in science fields today.
In addition, I participate in community education outreach by giving guest lectures to local elementary and middle school students and providing interviews on my research to local newspapers and on radio shows.
